When this Melbourne-based couple ᴀᴅᴏᴘᴛᴇᴅ Maine Coon, it was nothing ᴜɴᴜsᴜᴀʟ with his size. The owner shared that they got Kefir from a ᴄᴀᴛtery. They loved that the ᴄᴀᴛ’s fur was so beautiful and white. That’s where the name, which means dairy drink, came from. Kefir immediately ʀᴇFᴜsᴇᴅ to eat dry ᴄᴀᴛ food and started being fed only ᴍᴇᴀᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ɴᴀᴛᴜʀᴀʟ Fᴇᴇᴅ.
In fact, he looked exactly like his siblings. While most ᴄᴀᴛs’ growth tends to level off after a few years, at just two years old, Kefir simply hasn’t stopped growing. But today, he managed to ʙʀᴇᴀᴋ the Guinness World Record for the ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ’s ʟᴏɴɢᴇsᴛ ᴄᴀᴛ.
Currently weighing in at 12.5 kilos – even Maine Coons, one of the largest ᴄᴀᴛ breeds, tend to average out at somewhere between 6.8 and 11.3 kilos – Kefir is one ʜᴇFᴛʏ ᴍᴀᴍᴍᴀl. And since Maine Coons tend to stop growing by the age of 4, there’s a lot more growing to go.
Yuliya revealed that the only drawback to Kefir’s maintenance is the large amount of wool that the ᴄᴀᴛ leaves around the house. However, it is ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴇᴅ like a true family member and always sits together with Yuliya and her family by the table when they’re dining.
Yuliya added that Kefir has developed a habit to jump on her at night when she sleeps. “He didn’t do that when he was smaller and it wouldn’t be that inconvenient, but now the ᴄᴀᴛ became very big and heavy. It’s not that easy to sleep like that. It’s funny how others react when they see the ᴄᴀᴛ because it is huge. Many people think that it’s a dog at first”
Questioned whether Kefir is really that big, Yulia adds: ‘I don’t use Photoshop. The breed hails from the state of Maine in the US and is considered one of the oldest homegrown breeds in the country.
It was considered the largest breed of the domestiᴄᴀᴛed ᴄᴀᴛ until the Savannah ᴄᴀᴛ in the 1980s. On average, ᴍᴀʟᴇs weigh up to 18lbs while Fᴇᴍᴀʟᴇs weigh up to 12lbs. Maine Coons also hold the record for the ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ’s ʟᴏɴɢᴇsᴛ ᴄᴀᴛ, with Stewie from Nevada measuring 48.5 inches from his nose to his tail before his ᴅᴇᴀth in 2010.
