Chewy is a three-month-old Chihuahua found by an airport security guard at the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. He was abandoned inside one of the airport’s restrooms. Apparently, Chewy’s owner was ꜰʟᴇᴇɪɴɢ to ᴇsᴄᴀᴘᴇ an ᴀʙᴜsɪᴠᴇ relationship. Sadly, his owner couldn’t bring him on her flight, so she decided to leave Chewy with a letter, hoping a goodʜᴇᴀʀᴛed person would find him.
Found along with Chewy was a handwritten note from his owner describing how they had fled ᴍɪsᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ together — a ᴅᴇsᴘᴇʀᴀᴛᴇ ᴇsᴄᴀᴘᴇ which, ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢly, ended up forcing them apart. The letter read, “Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an ᴀʙᴜsɪᴠᴇ relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ, but she has NO other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were ꜰɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ, and he has a ʙɪɢ ᴋɴᴏᴛ ᴏɴ ʜɪs ʜᴇᴀᴅ. He probably needs a ᴠᴇᴛ. I love Chewy sooo much. Please love and take care of him.”
Chewy needed immediate ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄᴀʟ attention for a ʜᴇᴀᴅ ᴛʀᴀᴜᴍᴀ. To help him, the airport staff reached out to Connor and Millie’s Dog Rᴇsᴄᴜᴇ, a foster-based local non-profit center. Fortunately, the Rᴇsᴄᴜᴇ center took Chewy in, and he was rushed to an ᴇᴍᴇʀɢᴇɴᴄʏ ᴠᴇᴛ ᴄʟɪɴɪᴄ. Connor said: “My ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ ᴅʀᴏᴘᴘᴇᴅ to my knees. I didn’t hesitate to accept him and instructed my foster to immediately get him to an E.R.” Soon, Chewy made a full ʀᴇᴄᴏᴠᴇʀʏ, and his story touched so many people’s ʜᴇᴀʀᴛs that it didn’t take much time for the shelter to find him a forever home.
The whereabouts of the woman who had been forced to leave Chewy behind aren’t known, but Gilliam hopes that by sharing their story, it will help other people with pets in ᴀʙᴜsɪᴠᴇ situations. If escaping with a pet isn’t possible, local animal Rᴇsᴄᴜᴇ groups can provide care for them in the meantime so both can make it through. Shelters will often assist in finding a way to keep pets and their owners together in these cases, too. Gilliam said: “This is a very overlooked issue as a whole. We also wanted to try and get the message to Chewy’s mom that she did a brave thing and that he is safe and will have a great life.”
